SARIKEI: This town need to incorporate the ‘green concept’ to its development plan, says Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

“In town planning, quality of life matters more than the size, as far as the population is concerned. The green and clean concept should be able to create an environment that is conducive to the people, for them to live and work in,” he said when launching Sarikei Fest 2015 on Saturday night.

According to him, the green concept applies to a broad field of physical aspects in town planning such as good roads, well-maintained drains and streetlights, efficient waste disposal system, as well as beautification of compounds and landscaping.

On Sarikei Fest 2015,Wong said just like the famous ‘Pineapple Fest’, it was a reflection of the government’s plan to develop this division into becoming the ‘Food Basket of Sarawak’.

Later, the minister presented prizes to winners of this year’s ‘Pineapple Fest’ photography contest.

The ceremony was witnessed by Sarikei Resident Dr Anthony Valentine Laiseh, permanent secretary to Wong’s ministry Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, Sarikei District Council chairman Chan Phan Chan and its secretary Noraishan Morshidi, as well as festival organising committee chairman Awangko Ibrahim Awangko Matosen.
